City commences with further upgrades to Kruskal Avenue in Bellville CBD

The City’s Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate is about to
commence with the construction of the second phase of the Kruskal Avenue
upgrade in the Bellville central business district (CBD). Kruskal Avenue is one
of the main pedestrian routes which links the Bellville Station to Voortrekker
Road and the surrounding business district. This phase of the project includes
the upgrade of the remaining section of Kruskal Avenue and Lower Blanckenberg
Street.
Phase two of the Kruskal Avenue project aims to improve the pedestrian environment by upgrading the sidewalks, lights and stormwater system in Kruskal Avenue and Lower Blanckenberg Street. The Middestad Mall's delivery area will also be upgraded to address the existing traffic congestion and conflict between pedestrians and delivery vehicles.
The contractor has started establishing a site camp today, 15 May 2023 and plans to start with the actual construction work on 29 May 2023. This upgrade project will take place over a 12-month period.
'We would like to inform residents and businesses in the surrounding area of the upcoming construction works along Kruskal Avenue. These construction works are necessary to improve the infrastructure and facilities in the Bellville CBD, which will ultimately benefit everyone. With Phase 2 of the Kruskal Avenue project, we will be upgrading the road, sidewalk and utilities to improve safety, accessibility, and overall functionality in the area.
'We understand that this may cause some inconvenience but can assure residents that our teams will do their best to minimise disruption by completing the work as efficiently as possible. Also, we will ensure access is maintained to all businesses during working hours,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The City would like to advise residents that there may be some temporary road closures and changes to traffic patterns during the construction period; these will be communicated in advance.
The first phase of the project included sections of Teddington Road, Voortrekker Road and Kruskal Avenue in the Bellville CBD. Construction commenced in January 2019 and was completed in February 2020.
The first phase comprised the following upgrades:
- The road surface of Teddington Road was upgraded, sidewalks paved, new trees were planted and new benches, lights and public artworks were installed
- Sidewalks along Voortrekker Road were repaved and the centre island improved
- At the intersection of Voortrekker and Durban Roads, the sidewalks were repaved, the pedestrian crossing improved, new trees planted, heritage features upgraded and new benches, lights and public artworks were installed
- Kruskal Avenue was repaved, new trees were planted and new benches, lights and public artworks were installed
The upgrade project forms part of the Mayor's Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP), Bellville Community Action Plan (CAP), Voortrekker Road Corridor revitalisation and the Voortrekker Road Corridor Integration Zone project.
